Among the ruins left behind by a bloody civil war, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth conspire against the king, and commit a series of heinous crimes, in order to survive and usurp the crown. Shakespeare’s darkest play, about ambition and power, ‘probably the most perfect of Shakespeare’s plays’, according to George Orwell, where ‘Shakespeare's qualities as a poet and as a dramatist are combined […] more successfully than in any other’. The National Theatre production is directed by Rufus Norris (Threepenny Opera, London Road), with Rory Kinnear (Young Marx, Othello) as Macbeth, and Anne-Marie Duff (Oil, Suffragette) as Lady Macbeth.
