What was Athens, a small Ottoman city, like in the early 20th century? How did the creation of the new Athens begin in the years of King Otto’s reign? How was Athens transformed, in less than one century, under the reign of King George I, into a neoclassical city that hosted with great success the first Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896? Using unknown archival material, plans, engravings and photographs that were discovered and painstakingly conserved in the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe and Greece, director Maria Iliou, historical consultant Alexander Kitroeff and their team unfold once again an engrossing story, in a documentary that was first presented at the Benaki Museum in 2020 for a few days only, as the Covid-19 pandemic broke out.
