Valery Gergiev conducts a new production by François Girard, whose astounding 2013 Parsifal set new standards for Wagner stagings. John Macfarlane’s sets evoke a rich, layered tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting. Talented German soprano Anja Kampe makes her Met debut as the devoted Senta, whose true love will free the Dutchman from the curse. Bass Franz-Josef Selig sings the role of her father, Daland, and tenor Sergey Skorokhodov is the hunter Erik, Senta’s deserted former lover.
The creator of controversial masterpieces that remain at the core of the contemporary operatic repertoire, Richard Wagner (1813–1883) revolutionized every theatrical convention, rendering music and words equal in his works. His artistic vision was based on the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, the total work of art in which music is closely linked to theatre, poetry, architecture, painting, and other creative fields.
