Overview

The Megaron Garden will be the site for the celebratory closing concert of the Rolex Arts Festival, featuring Music fellows Dina Elwedidi, Aurelio Martínez, and Marcus Gilmore leading world music performances and jamming by their Egyptian, Honduran/Garifuna and U.S. ensembles. Joining as a special guest will be legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil, Dina Elwedidi’s mentor in the Rolex mentoring programme.

About the Rolex Arts Festival

“Rolex Arts Festival: Celebrating 20 Years of Mentoring” is a three-day celebration taking place May 26-28, 2023 in multiple venues across Athens to mark the 20th anniversary of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. Spanning dance, theatre, music, film, architecture, visual arts and literature, the Rolex mentoring programme gives emerging artists the rare opportunity to work alongside senior artists in their fields for an extended period of creative collaboration.

For the first time, Rolex will bring this programme and dozens of the world’s most talented artists to Athens in a celebration of the legacy of 20 years of mentoring.

Multidisciplinary performances, exhibitions, readings, screenings, installations and discussions will show the achievements and creative relationships of more than 60 Rolex protégés and mentors.

Marcus Gilmore
Described as “a startlingly innovative drummer with a genuinely broad scope” by jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer, New York-based musician Marcus Gilmore has performed with leading musicians, played on 24 albums, and been recognized with numerous awards, residencies, and fellowships. With his grandfather, the legendary Roy Haynes, Gilmore improvised all the drumming for the 2020 Pixar film Soul. He performed his first orchestral composition in 2020 with members of the Cape Town Philharmonic through the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. In 2022, the Marcus Gilmore Trio made its debut at New York’s pre-eminent jazz club, the Village Vanguard.
Marcus Gilmore was mentored by Zakir Hussain in 2018–2019.

Dina Elwedidi
Dina Elwedidi Egyptian singer and Composer joined Elwarsha Theater Troupe in 2008, where she learned to sing a wide variety of traditional genres. She subsequently formed her own band, in which she fuses local and global musical styles. Her debut album Turning Back was released in 2014 and her second album, Slumber, in 2018. Elwedidi represented Egypt in the music and environmental initiative “The Nile Project” in 2012 and has performed around the world, including appearances with Gilberto Gil at London’s 2012 Back2Black Festival and Cairo’s 2013 Jazz Festival.
Dina Elwedidi was mentored by Gilberto Gil in 2012−2013.

Aurelio Martínez
Based in Honduras, singer-songwriter, guitarist and percussionist Aurelio Martínez is a tradition-bearer of Garifuna culture, which fuses African and Caribbean-Indian roots. He began playing drums in public at age six and formed the ensemble Lita Ariran in his teens. In 2004, he was named “Newcomer of the Year” by Afropop Worldwide for his first solo album, Garifuna Soul. His award-winning album Laru Beya (2011) was made in collaboration with Youssou N’Dour. His 2014 Lándini was named album of the year by the magazine fRoots. His most recent album, Darandi (2017), is a collection of favourite songs from his career.
Aurelio Martínez was mentored by Youssou N’Dour in 2008–2009.
