Romeo and Juliet

Romeo + Juliet-May 24-0486-NEF_b (c)Elina Giounanli

Overview

William Shakespeare’s unsurpassed poetic masterpiece is transported to the present day, to a Balkan city where two families, the Greek Capoulets and the Turkish Montegi, live together, unfortunately not always in peace. People of different cultures and religions, when they meet they communicate in the only common language they know, English. Crime is on the rise. Music, the sound of brass and religion are integral parts of their lives. They party wildly, they live wildly, violence is part of their daily lives. On the opposite side of all this is the love story of the Turkish Romeo and the Greek Juliet. A bad moment, a game that ends in murder brings disaster. The show premieres in Ankara and will continue in Izmir and Istanbul, before the Greek premiere at the Megaron. A special trilingual performance, with surtitles, where two peoples – two families with different religions and cultures, imbued with a long-standing conflict, follow a blind hatred. But despite this hatred and the animosity that divides the families, Greek Juliet and Turkish Romeo fall in love defying all obstacles, teaching the value of love through Shakespeare’s poetic word.

A major international co-production between Greece and Turkey with one of the greatest classics of world drama, William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, with Greek and Turkish actors directed by Lefteris Yovanidis. The extremely ambitious and highly demanding project aims to be a “bridge” between the two countries, Greece and Turkey, as it provides a unique opportunity for Greek and Turkish artists to collaborate and unite their voices.
