Set against the magical archaeological site of Ancient Messene, where the past openly converses with the present, this film tells the story of the life of the distinguished archaeologist Petros Themelis. A creative 77-minute documentary, it explores the intellectual pursuits, journey, dreams, and works of Petros Themelis. This distillation emerges from his own narratives during different phases of the last five years of his life, spent in the place where he lived and worked for 37 consecutive years—the place where he passed away. A pioneer of archaeology and a true intellectual, Themelis guides us not only through his second home, Ancient Messene, but also through his own spiritual world. For him, archaeology was a gift to be shared, a piece of the past that must communicate with the public across time and directly. This sharing was the goal of every study, excavation, and restoration in Themelis’s career, and it is precisely this spirit that comes alive in the film. Archival material spanning decades coexists with the present through projections onto the monuments. Filming took place during the last five years of Themelis’s life and was completed shortly after his passing in the autumn of 2023.
