Megaron presents once again the first three historical documentaries by Maria Iliou, covering the period from 1821 to 1940 and tracing the history of Athens. The next three documentaries, which cover the years 1940–2021, will follow shortly, completing the six-part series devoted to the city.
What was Athens like as a small Ottoman town in the early 19th century? How did the new Athens begin to take shape in the years of King Otto? How, in less than a century, did the city transform under King George I into a neoclassical capital that proudly hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896?
Through previously unknown archival material, drawings, engravings, and photographs discovered and restored in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Greece, filmmaker Maria Iliou, historian and consultant Alexander Kitroeff, and their collaborators unfold a captivating narrative in a documentary film screened once again at the Megaron, following its great success in 2022.
The music of the era, recreated by composer Nikos Platyrakhos along with his original score, combined with the rare visual material and the stories woven by the speakers, brings to life the formative years of modern Athens.
