To mark the eightieth anniversary of the birth of Georges Aperghis, one of the most significant innovators of contemporary music and musical theatre, Megaron dedicates a three-day tribute to his work. Trumpeter Marco Blaauw, a tireless “explorer” of his instrument – from the primordial clay horn to the double-bell trumpet – presents Aperghis’s new work Trompe-Oreille, an “acoustic illusion” commissioned by IRCAM. A rising star of the ECHO Rising Stars scheme, young Austrian cellist Valentin Fritz favours the unusual: she collaborates with contemporary composers, balancing between the classical repertoire and works that push beyond the conventional boundaries of musical practice. The tribute concludes with Theano Papadaki and the Ventus Ensemble: works by Aperghis that combine sounds, images, fragments of speech and song in a paradoxical and playful narrative, presented alongside music by his student Nikolas Tzortzis, as well as by Luciano Berio.
