Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell revives the classic story of Carmen with a staging that brings the action into the modern era and finds at the heart of the drama issues that are more relevant than ever: gender violence, abusive professional relationships and the desire to break social boundaries. Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a dynamic quartet of stars in the complex title role, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Don José, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the arrogant Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s stirring music.
