Franco Zeffirelli’s magnificent, exotic production, a dazzling spectacle with pagodas, dragons, gongs and lanterns. In the epic fairy tale set in a China of legend, the cold Princess Turandot will accept as her husband the man who will solve three riddles, death being the penalty for failure. Many suitors lose their lives, until the mysterious Prince Calàf finds the right answers and reassures the fearful princess with a kiss. A thrilling opening scene and a finale that was completed by Franco Alfano for the 1926 premiere at the Teatro alla Scala, upon Puccini’s sudden death. Legendary bass James Morris appears in the role of Calàf’s father Timur.
