Lecture by Françoise Combes: The Black Holes

Overview
These mysterious celestial objects are forever surprising us!
This year, however, thanks to synchronized observations through a combination of many radio telescopes on our planet, the first image of the shadow of a black hole has been made possible. The top expert in the field of galaxies explains how the vast black holes control the rhythm of star formation in the galaxies by rejecting their ‘nourishment’.
For the last 40 years, Françoise Combes has studied the origin of the universe, being the first woman to hold the Chair of Galaxies and Cosmology at the historic Collège de France. She has received the Silver Medal of the CNRS, and the Tycho Brahe Prize of the European Astronomical Society (EAS); she is an Officer of the French Legion of Honour; she has also been awarded the Lise Meitner Prize of the University of Technology CHALMERS in Gothenburg. A member of the Académie Européenne, she has been president of the Société française d’astronomie.
