George Frideric Handel: Agrippina

Overview
OPERA – NEW PRODUCTION
Handel’s Agrippina, a tale set in ancient Rome, explores the dark side of human nature, and the intrigues born of the lust for power. Director Sir David McVicar ingeniously reframes the action of this black comedy to ‘the present’, showing that the abuse of power is a timeless issue. Star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato appears in the role of manipulative, scheming Agrippina, under the baton of Harry Bicket. The all-star cast features mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as Agrippina’s son and future emperor Nerone, soprano Brenda Rae as the seductive Poppea, countertenor Iestyn Davies as the ambitious officer Ottone, and bass Matthew Rose as the feeble Emperor Claudius.
