The ballet Les Sylphides, by the ingenious Frédéric Chopin, is a refined example of neo-Romantic ballet from the early 20th century, an era in which dance-theatre was seeking new means of expression. The great choreographer and dance reformer Michel Fokine revives the traditions of Romanticism with great respect, seeking, as he himself noted, “to restore conventional ballet dance to the moment of its highest development.”
Based on Cervantes’s novella “La Gitanilla,” Marius Petipa’s “Paquita” goes beyond the bounds of a simple ballet performance; it is a historical treasure that preserves, unaltered, the authenticity and grandeur of nineteenth-century classical ballet. The performance stands as a tribute from a new generation of dancers to the aesthetic of this great choreographer and unsurpassed master of the classical style.
