ITALIAN MUSIC FOR CELLO PICCOLO AND BASSO CONTINUO.
In the first half of the 18th century, London was one of the most important music scenes of the mature Baroque period, attracting many musicians from continental Europe. Among them, many virtuoso cellists who were instrumental in the creation of the English cello school. The works on the programme, written by Italian composers of the period who lived in London, are typical of this school, except that they move in high tonal ranges by the standards of the time. This probably means that they were intended for a smaller instrument, a small cello or a large violin, the so-called four-string cello piccolo. The virtuoso cellist Demos Goundaroulis, an artist restless, flexible and open to all kinds of musical challenges, became acquainted with this hybrid instrument through his time in the magical world of early music. Together with musicians who have mastered the secrets of the baroque, he invites us to get to know its special sound and part of its rare, original repertoire.
