Two men are called to reveal their vulnerabilities: James, a former alcoholic, and Luca, who—under James’s guidance—follows the 12-Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous in order to overcome his addiction. Their friendship gradually develops through stories and experiences they share over coffee. Until the Fifth Step — “having admitted to ourselves the exact nature of our wrongs and confessed them to a Higher Power and to another human being” — confronts them with dangerous truths and threatens the trust that underpins their recovery.
The new play by award-winning playwright David Ireland, already highly praised, delves into sensitive themes such as addiction, male friendship, and the vulnerability of men who are stereotypically expected to be strong. In the leading roles are Jack Lowden (Laurence Olivier Award winner; Slow Horses, Dunkirk) and Martin Freeman (EMMY and BAFTA winner; The Hobbit, The Responder).
