Carmen Suite: The story of the untameable Gypsy girl who seduces Corporal Don José, and then leaves him for the sake of the famous torero Escamillo. Georges Bizet’s wonderful music in an authentic score by Rodion Shchedrin, husband of Bolshoi’s ‘prima ballerina assoluta’ Maya Plisetskaya, who created the title role in Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso’s Carmen Suite. A ballet that was banned by the Culture Ministry of the USSR, until the intervention of Dmitri Shostakovich.
Petrushka: A puppet comes to life for a short time, but long enough for him to fall in love with the Ballerina and be killed for her sake. Igor Stravinsky’s masterpiece, which was first performed by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes with Vaslav Nijinsky in the title role, is presented here in a new creation for the Bolshoi by contemporary Romanian choreographer Edward Clug, premiered in November 2018.
