Megaron outside Megaron: Concert at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi

14 June 2025: The Athens Concert Hall offered a unique musical experience at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi, a place with special historical and emotional significance. Internationally renowned violinist Leonidas Kavakos and the distinguished musicians of the Apollωn Ensemble, Alexandros Sakarellos (violin), Ilias Livieratos (viola), Timotheos Gavriilidis-Petrin (cello), Christophor Miroshnikov (cello), in a program of high aesthetic and deep emotional intensity, gave the audience an experience of rare spiritual depth by performing important works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert.
The concert was the first of Megaron the Athens Concert Hall events outside the Megaron for the summer of 2025, as part of the Megaron’s outreach and effort to give audiences outside Athens the opportunity to enjoy unique musical experiences, a long-standing goal of the Megaron’s Board of Directors and its president, Nikos Pimblis.
The concerts will continue at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on July 8, with Nicola Piovani in “Great Films – Great Music,” at the Theater of Ancient Messene on July 12, with the Camerata Orchestra of the Friends of Music in Norma in concert form with exceptional soloists, in Northern Evia in July and autumn 2025 with 9 concerts and 3 educational activities.
The concert at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi was attended by a large crowd, and in order to give more people the opportunity to enjoy this unique experience, the dress rehearsal was held at the Rethymno Conservatory (Neratze Mosque) and was open to the public.
Many local organizations contributed to the concert at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi. Megaron the Athens Concert Hall expresses its warmest thanks to the Holy Metropolis of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, His Eminence Metropolitan Prodromos and all the people of the Holy Monastery of Arkadi — with special gratitude to Father Theologos for his warm hospitality and touching support, to the Region of Crete, under whose auspices the event was held, to the Municipality of Rethymno and Grecotel for their decisive contribution and hospitality, and to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno.
The event was honored by the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni, His Eminence Prodromos, Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, the Chief Secretary of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Vosporius Magafas, the Regional Governor of Crete, Mr. Stavros Arnaoutakis, the Mayor of Rethymno, Mr. Giorgos Marinakis, the Deputy Regional Governor of Rethymno, Ms. Maria Lionis, Deputy Mayors and representatives of local authorities, Ms. Dora Bakoyannis and Mr. Isidoros Kouvelos, Mr. Nikos Sifounakis, Professor Nikos Stampolidis, Director of the Acropolis Museum, the President of the Athens Concert Hall, Mr. Nikos Pimblis, the Artistic Director of the Concert Hall, Mr. Yannis Vakarelis, and Friends of the Megaron who traveled from Athens especially for the concert.
