An in-depth encounter with an unexpectedly multifaceted Cavafy. Through personal notes and articles by C.P. Cavafy, as well as his iconic but also lesser-known poems, the performance unfolds aspects of his richly layered work, thought and life that are unknown to the wider public. How “political” was Cavafy, and how did he approach the major historical narratives of his time? What did he believe about the Parthenon Marbles, the Cyprus question, and British imperialism? What was his relationship with economics, and his attitude towards the fundamental principles of capitalism? How do art, memory, desire and self-analysis converse with one another in his work?
The performance is framed by a rendition of Cavafy poems set to music by Dimitris Mitropoulos (1925–1926).
