100 YEARS OF MIKIS THEODORAKIS
As part of the Year of Mikis Theodorakis, the youth symphony orchestra Camerata Junior and the Musica choir join forces on stage. This tribute highlights different facets of the multifaceted work of the great Greek composer, through selected pieces from his religious, symphonic, and stage compositions. The evening opens with the choir performing two works from different periods, yet united in a shared atmosphere of reverence: the Byzantine-influenced Vespers from Theodorakis’s Liturgy No. 2, and Verdi’s masterpiece of Romantic choral music, Stabat Mater from the Quattro Pezzi Sacri. Next, the two ensembles collaborate with a folk baritone in the iconic cantata Epiphania Averof, set to the poetry of Giorgos Seferis — a blend of lyrical poetic expression with the political and existential depth of Theodorakis’s music. In the second part of the program, Camerata Junior performs excerpts from the Ballet Suite “Zorba”, Theodorakis’s most extroverted and universal creation, where the Greek spirit, freedom, and passion are vividly brought to life.
