The Megaron The Athens Concert Hall inaugurates the “Beethoven 200” cycle –two hundred years after his death– which will unfold throughout the entire season and is dedicated to the late string quartets. With these works Beethoven radically renewed the genre, leaving a legacy that stands as a point of reference for every ensemble.
The Quatuor Modigliani, a sought-after ensemble on the international scene, has been devoted since 2024 to recording all sixteen of the composer’s quartets. From the dramatic “La Malinconia,” the finale of String Quartet No. 6 in B-flat major, Op. 18, where the boldness of the young Beethoven is already discernible, to String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135, his last completed quartet, with the enigmatic question “Must it be?” accompanying the motif of the finale, the program traces the journey of a composer who expanded the boundaries of the string quartet more than any other.
The contemporary work by the Czech composer Kryštof Mařatka, Amedea – visage de jeune fille, is written for the Quatuor Modigliani. Inspired by the eponymous portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, it creates a fertile dialogue between painting and music, linking the ensemble’s name to the artistic inspiration of the new work.
