The ensemble was founded in 1986 in Constantinople and, bringing together leading virtuosi of the Ottoman musical tradition, rescued from obscurity the work of Constantinople’s Greek (Romiot) composers, presenting to Greek audiences a repertoire that had until then been almost unknown. The concert marks eleven years since the passing of Nikiphoros Metaxas, as well as the recent donation of his archive to the “Lilian Voudouri” Music Library by his wife and close collaborator, the performer and lyricist Vassiliki Papageorgiou. The music event is presented by Contemporary Bosphorus, a branch of the classical orchestra, in collaboration with members of the music group Mode Plagal and other distinguished musicians.
