The classical kemençe in the 21st century Composition Workshop for Young Composers Composition Workshop for Young Composers

Overview
Five young composers write five new works in which the classical kemençe is the protagonist. The principal melodic instrument of Constantinople Greeks until the early 20th century, is innovatively paired with an instrumental ensemble composed of strings, winds, harp, piano and percussion. Three years after the death of Theodoros Antoniou, the great teacher’s pioneering idea, first launched in 1997, remains strong and continues to flourish: every year, young artists are given the opportunity to present their works at the Composition Workshop. An initiative that is driven by faith in youth, music and creation. The programme’s works were composed in 2020 and were to be presented at Megaron in May of that year. The concert that was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, is taking place this year with the same soloist – the top classical kemençe virtuoso Sokratis Sinopoulos.
