From the 5th century to the present day, the birth of Jesus Christ has been celebrated in the music
and song of the Orthodox Church, as well as in the secular music of the Byzantine and later tradition.
The programme of the The light of Christ has risen event features songs from the Byzantine musical tradition of Greece, compositions by such important composers as Romanos Melodos, Ioannis Damascenos, Petros Peloponnisiou, Iacovos Protopsaltos, Hourmouzos Hartofylakos, songs for the Christmas period, as well as Greek traditional music from Cappadocia, Asia Minor and eastern Thrace, dedicated to the “lost homelands”. There will also be a premiere of a new work by Thodore Antoniou, The star has risen, written especially for this concert.
