FROM THE DISCOVERY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY TO THE SYSTEMATIC EXCAVATION AND DISCOVERY A CENTURY LATER. The strategic position of Lefkada at the entrance to the Amvrakikos Gulf and on the maritime trade routes to the West and the Adriatic highlights its importance in the context of Corinthian colonisation. The extensive settlement and burial remains of the powerful Corinthian colony, which in its historical course experienced great economic and cultural prosperity, are being excavated over time in the context of rescue excavations by the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of Aitoloakarnania and Lefkada, mainly on the occasion of the intense building activity and public works. The only systematic excavation ever carried out in the ancient city of Lefkada, which was funded by the Region of the Ionian Islands and the Municipality of Lefkada, began six years ago at the ancient theatre of the city and has revealed an impressive monument along with many interesting facts. The ancient theatre is located about three kilometres south of the modern town, with a panoramic view of the channel and in a central area of the ancient town. So far, research has largely revealed the hollow, the orchestra, the orchestra, the frieze, the lanes, the walls of the hollow and much of the stage, which is preserved at foundation level. The theatre was probably constructed in the 4th century BC, as was that of neighbouring Acarnania. This is the first ancient theatre to come to light in the Ionian Islands, and it is an imposing central monument in the urban fabric of ancient Lefkada.
