The Vamos Orchestra explores the origins of musical theatre, unravelling the threads of a turbulent period in Greek history. Through the musical currents and performances of the time, it traces the crucial historical events centred on Eleftherios Venizelos: the national recovery and the emergence of a new Greece, the Balkan Wars and the doubling of the state’s territory, the National Schism, the Asia Minor Campaign, the signing of the Treaties of Sèvres and Lausanne, and the four peaceful, creative years of 1928–1932.
Musical theatre flourished significantly during the Venizelos era. Greece’s urban centres were strongly influenced by European trends, embracing operetta, variety theatre, musical revues and melodrama.
Landmark works include revues (Xifir Faler, Peirasmos and Panoramas, Ta Panathinaia, I Anaboumboula), operettas (O Vaftistikos by Theofrastos Sakellaridis, Oi Apachides ton Athinon by Nikos Hatziapostolou), and the celebrated Mandra tou Attik.
