Selection of orchestral excerpts from Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, arranged by Lorin Maazel (Der Ring ohne Worte, 1987).
The orchestra Utopia was founded a few years ago by Teodor Currentzis, not so much as a symphonic ensemble in the usual sense, but rather as a creative community of distinguished musicians from across the globe, united by shared values and, above all, by their pursuit of sonic perfection and uncompromising realisation of their musical vision.
For this concert, they choose to take on Richard Wagner and his opus magnum, Der Ring des Nibelungen. The celebrated tetralogy, condensed into a single symphonic work, vividly captures the grandeur of the German Romantic’s musical language while also tracing the mythical narrative of the Ring — without the support of sung words! Devotees of Wagner’s world will find themselves once again in a familiar and beloved universe, while those who have so far kept their distance from a world that may seem remote or foreign will have a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of the Ring as it unfolds under the “magical” interpretive guidance of this charismatic conductor.
