The magic of Christmas meets pure musical genius in a radiant concert with the Camerata, Vassilis Christopoulos and two outstanding soloists.
Why Mozart at Christmas? Because his music combines light, joy and warmth with an elegant, almost childlike innocence. The immediacy of his melodies meets subtlety and emotional depth, creating a sound perfectly suited to celebration, hope and renewal.
Vassilis Christopoulos returns to the podium of the Camerata – Friends of Music Orchestra, bringing a distinguished international career in both the symphonic and operatic repertoire. He is currently Chief Conductor of the Graz Opera and the Graz Philharmonic, and his close affinity with Mozart is also reflected in his discography: his album Mozart Arias was named the best Mozart recording of 2009.
He is joined by two exceptional soloists. The internationally acclaimed soprano Julia Lezhneva performs Exsultate, jubilate, the brilliant motet Mozart composed in Milan at the age of seventeen. Leading Greek clarinettist Spyros Mourikis performs the Clarinet Concerto, the composer’s last completed instrumental work.
The programme concludes with Symphony No. 38, the “Prague”, Mozart’s gift to the city that embraced his music. Together, these three masterpieces illuminate different chapters of his life: from the teenage prodigy who dazzled Milan to the composer in his final years.
Performing on period instruments, the Camerata brings to life the distinctive sounds available to Mozart himself: wooden flutes, gut strings, natural horns and valveless trumpets.
