Dmitri Shostakovich dedicated his harrowing String Quartet in C minor to the memory of the victims of fascism and war. The famous DSCH motif (the musical cryptogram of the composer’s initials) dominates a soundscape full of lament, sarcasm, and hidden pain—like a musical self-portrait set in a world of destruction.
Finally, Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor brings all the soloists together on stage. A work of symphonic scale, with intense contrasts and dramatic climaxes, it balances between Romantic passion and Classical form.
