Overview
Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall celebrates its 30th anniversary!
A unique, rare and magnificent performance of Symphony No. 9 by Ludwig van Beethoven in period instruments will be screened online by the Athens Concert Hall, in free streaming, to mark the 30th anniversary of the official opening of Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall.
The first concert given at the Christos Lambrakis Hall, then Friends of Music Hall, on 21 March 1991, was a recital by viola soloist Yuri Bashmet. At that time, the hall’s spectacular acoustics offered a unique experience to the audience who came to enjoy the new jewel of the country’s cultural scene. Today, 30 years later, Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall takes a new innovative step, by presenting for the first time in Greece a classical music concert streaming in 360° video, thus offering the public yet another unique audiovisual experience.
Beethoven’s crowning symphonic work is interpreted by the award-winning Musicians of Camerata – The Friends of Music Orchestra, well-known in Greece and abroad for their historical interpretation practices, under the musical direction of internationally acclaimed conductor George Petrou. They are joined by four Greek vocal soloists who have already distinguished themselves in lyrical theatres around the world: soprano Myrtò Papatanasiu, mezzo Mary-Εllen Nesi, tenor Vassilis Kavayas and bass Christophoros Stamboglis. The magnificent polyphonic parts of the Ode to Joy will be interpreted by the members of the ERT Choir (musical preparation – coaching: Michalis Patseas, piano accompaniment: Pavlos Sifnaios) and the Choir of the Municipality of Athens (coaching: Stavros Beris).
Online streaming using 360° video, which has been used primarily in broadcasting large rock concerts and less frequently in classical music, allows the viewer to choose where to focus his attention on the concert which is recorded by three different cameras. This option is available to viewers using their mobile, computer or smart TV from 27 March 2021 onwards, here.
The concert is broadcast as part of the Megaron Online programme on the website, Youtube and Facebook page of Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall and will be available on all platforms until 21 April 2021. In addition, the public of all ages will be able to watch it freely for one year on the Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall website (on demand) and YouTube channel.
