Overview

Although it stands out as a wind instrument for the symphony orchestra, especially thanks to its velvety timbre, the bassoon rarely plays a leading role in the chamber music repertoire or in works that assign it a solo role. The unique qualities of this charming instrument promise to be highlighted in this recital by the talented bassoonist Mathis Stier, whose programme covers a wide range of musical creations. From the virtuosic clarity of Baroque, the expressive depth of Romanticism and the exuberant melodiousness of Impressionism to the subversive spirit of the 21st century, the young soloist from Germany, who already has major international accolades to his credit, fascinates with his unparalleled technical excellence, passion and high musical perception in such diverse and bold choices. At Megaron the Athens Concert Hall he appears with the Japanese pianist Rie Akamatsu.

Every year the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) selects young artists of outstanding merit to perform in ECHO member halls. Since 1995, the European Concert Hall Organisation, through its Rising Stars programme, has helped to promote the emergence of now well-known artists on the world music scene. in addition to highlighting rising stars, the aim of the programme is to promote respect for diversity, inclusion and the strengthening of social ties. In this context, the Rising Stars‘ recitals are accompanied by educational activities, workshops, visits to social structures, etc.

This year, in cooperation with El Sistema Greece, Sean Shibe visits a Controlled Temporary Accommodation Facility for Asylum Seekers in Attica (09.03) and Sebastian Heindl welcomes the children at the church organ of  Megaron the Athens Concert Hall (10.03). Furthermore, Mathis Stier gives a bassoon masterclass (10.03) and the Sonoro Quartet organises a mentoring workshop with the strings of El Sistema Greece’s intercultural symphonic Youth Orchestra (10.03).
