The “singer” Mikis Theodorakis meets the “singer” Franz Schubert through their string quartets. The poet Matthias Claudius with his poem “Death and the Daughter” meets Dionysios Solomos with “The Mad Mother”. Schubert’s well-known quartet “Death and the Maiden” meets Theodorakis’ lesser-known quartets. Works from the Greek composer’s creative youth, found in his archive over the last twenty years and slowly finding their place in the world repertoire, illuminate the period before the Epitaph, but also an important part of the not at all limited Greek creations for the string quartet format.
