Australian director Benedict Andrews sets Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece in the present, in a house symbolizing a golden prison. On a stifling night in Mississippi, the Pollitt family gathers in order to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. Secrets, lies, hypocrisy, and sexual repressions rise to the surface, and threaten to destroy a marriage and the future of the family itself. The stage is dominated by a bed and a shower, frequently used by a naked O’Connell in an effort to cleanse himself of his deep-rooted guilt.
