Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms were united by a deep personal and artistic friendship, as well as by a shared musical world that defined German Romanticism. Schumann’s Piano Quartet, written in 1842, the famous “year of chamber music,” converses with Brahms’s First Piano Quartet, which the younger composer began working on shortly after meeting Schumann and completed in 1861.
