This year’s tribute by the Athens Concert Hall to the piano music of Sergei Rachmaninoff culminates in the presentation of his complete works for piano and orchestra over two concerts, as part of the Spring Festival. Such an ambitious artistic undertaking is, in itself, enough to promise profound musical excitement, given that each of Rachmaninoff’s works is a journey through different sonic landscapes, all distinguished by sweeping, unforgettable melodies, piquant harmonies, and brilliant, dazzling piano writing.
When, however, a single pianist is called upon to perform them all, the challenge takes on a new dimension—transforming the concerts into one of the greatest artistic feats a virtuoso can undertake. Denis Kozhukhin is among the rare artists fully equipped to meet such a challenge, and, even more, to reveal the uniqueness of each work with both power and genuine emotion. One of the world’s most complete and compelling pianists, Kozhukhin returns to the Megaron to deliver two landmark evenings in today’s Greek musical life.
