Let’s imagine an ensemble of fine musicians from all over the world: from Australia to Peru and from Japan to the United States, with proven skills both as soloists and in musical interaction. These musicians are animated by a shared desire to serve their art with uncompromising dedication and vision, as members not just of an ordinary orchestra but of a vibrant artistic community, doing both musical and broader intellectual preparation on the works they (co-)decide to perform each time. And they have as their conductor, first among equals, Teodor Currentzis, an artist who has been stirring the waters of the international classical music scene for years with approaches that are radical, novel, extremely passionate but also cerebrally planned down to the last detail, approaches that provoke reactions of enthusiasm, if not frenzy, wherever they are practiced. It all sounds ideal, if not a figment of the imagination; and yet, as of 2022 it is a reality called Utopia. This ideal musical reality will gift the Athenian audience with a performance of Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony, which promises to be an experience of a lifetime.
