One of the most widely acclaimed chamber music ensembles in Greece, the Athens String Quartet has a wide repertoire and a diverse and flourishing artistic activity. Inspired by the profoundly emotional atmosphere of the Holy Week, the four musicians, together with distinguished mezzo-soprano Angeliki Kathariou, explore the “magical” transformation of the sound into a spiritual and universal language. To do so, they draw on the works of Franz Schubert and of the prolific Greek composer Philippos Tsalahouris, which although composed almost two centuries apart, find their place next to each other in the most natural and direct way in this evening’s programme.
PROGRAMME
Philippos Tsalahouris: String quartet no. 5, op. 86, Prayer before the end of thought (2013)
Cantate Domino, op. 104 no. 1, for voice and string quartet (2019)
Franz Schubert: String quartet no. 14 in D minor, D 810 “Death and the Maiden”
