The theme of the “child” holds a special place in art music creation. This particularly rich musical repertoire mainly began in the 19th century, as a result of Romantic sensitivity. First, we encounter the lullaby, common to all peoples and cultures. Many composers wrote lullabies, the most famous today being Brahms’. For lively children who resist sleep and trouble their parents, Britten wrote a sardonic, threatening lullaby. The issue of infant mortality also seemed to preoccupy Schubert and especially Mahler. Goethe’s well-known ballad The Erlking found its most vivid musical expression in Schubert’s composition. Childhood memories and innocence inspired great composers such as Bellini, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Massenet, Mussorgsky, and others, while the natural needs of a baby were uniquely satirized by Rossini’s witty pen. The theme of childhood also touched the sensitive chords of Greek composers: Kalomoiris, Labelet, Spathis, Evangelatos, Sisilianos, Dragatakis, among others. The concert will feature representative works for voice and piano by leading foreign and Greek composers inspired by the theme of the “child.”
